You may get assigned a "social issue" book, and you might think, "Ugh, I don't want to read about an issue." BUT don't think like that! Some of the best books out there are "issue" books! In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a good book out there (fiction or nonfiction) that doesn't talk about a "social issue" in some way.
So what are some incredible reads that focus on social issues? Try some of these...

Award season rolls around every year and immediately makes me feel like rushing out to read ALL the books on the award list that I haven’t read yet. Which is implausible since I’m usually already reading so much, but still!

The more I read, the more jaded I become. It takes a lot for me to finish a book these days. For instance, Young Adult literature has spoiled me for reading adult books. If it takes too long to get to the point or gets bogged down in too much detail and not enough plot, I won't read it. My litmus test for most books is the first line, first paragraph, first page and, if they're lucky, the first ten pages. At most I'll suffer through half a book before I quit. You wouldn't think it, but this librarian has become a reluctant reader! Jaded and easily bored by blah books, I have certain

It's Percy time! Not only are we having our discussion of the Percy Jackson series on Wednesday (see calendar to sign up!), but news about the next Percy Jackson movie was recently announced. That's right; The Sea of Monsters will soon be a movie. Check out the cast! The actress who played Glimmer in the new Hunger Games movie has signed on to play Clarisse.

The Hunger Games is officially the hottest book in the world right now. We get asked several times a day, every day, all day, if we have copies of the book. "Why, yes, yes, we do have 10 copies of the book. No. No, they are not here, sadly. They are all checked out! There are 820 holds on the book system wide. Would you like to wait for the book?" That's how it goes at the desk. BUT have no fear! Ms. Sarah has a read-alike list for you!

While there are many books on the shelves to purchase daily at the book sale, none of them look quite like the dazzling selection of hand-picked books, packaged and ready to be placed in the hands of someone that is in need of a gift. These books are proudly displayed showing their best side and standing out among the rest of the group. With the help of some Friends, Carol Siano, Susan Weinrebe and Gretchen Dust, they made fast and fun work out of task of breathing new life into some old favorites.
